Packing For University — Everything You Should Take.
Okay so you’ve accepted your place, sorted your accommodation and now have the mammoth task of deciding what to take and what not to take to university. Keep in mind that you will be moving into a relatively small room so packing your entire wardrobe may be a little unrealistic. Pack light and then there’s always the opportunity for a shopping spree with your new house mates once you’ve arrived!
So, to help you out a little we have listed, in groups, the essentials any first year university student may need..
Important Documents;
- Passport
- Driving licence
- Bank credit/debit card
- University correspondence (incl acceptance letter)
- CV/References
- Student contents insurance
- Student discount (eg railcards)
Studying Equipment;
- Diary/planner
- Dictionary/Thesaurus
- A4 notepads/binders
- Basic stationary (pens, pencils, highlighters etc)
- Post it notes
- Cello tape
- Stapler
Electricals;
- Laptop/portable computers
- Mobile phone
- Television
- USB
- Headphones
- Camera
- Chargers for all of the above!
Kitchenware;
- Corkscrew and bottle opener (necessity!)
- Wine glasses/shot glasses
- Basic cutlery (knives, forks, spoons etc)
- Basic crockery (plates, bowls, mugs etc)
- Tin opener
- Chopping board
- Cheese grater
- Tin foil-cling film
- Oven gloves/tea towels
- Washing up liquid/dish cloth/scrubbing brush
- Nibbles!
Bedroom;
- Duvet and duvet covers
- Pillows and pillow covers
- Sheets and sheet protector
- Blankets/throw
- Laundry bin
- Clothes hangers
Bathroom;
- Basic toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, razor)
- Hairspray, hair brush and combs
- Toothbrush and tooth paste
- Bath and hand towels
- Deodorant and body spray
- Toilet roll
- Tampons and sanitary towels
Clothing;
- Dressing gown and slippers
- Underwear (pants, socks and bras)
- Swimwear and flip flops
- Casual wear (t-shirts, jeans, jumpers)
- Winter coat and waterproof (Umberella!)
- Gloves, hats and scarf
- Evening wear for special occasions
- Fancy dress
Healthcare;
- Paracetamol and painkillers
- Any allergy prescriptions
- Basic first aid kit (plasters, antiseptic wipes etc)
- Nail clippers/tweezers
- Multivitamins
- Birth control and condoms
TIP - If you are staying in Halls of Residence check with your university accommodation provider to see if you have student contents insurance already in place, and if you do just check to make sure it covers everything!
