Blue Monday, Beat the January Blues

January Blues? Time to Think Holiday!

The first few weeks of the year is one of the most popular times for booking a holiday. When a plunge through the January sales doesn't beat the January blues and you’ve become disheartened with your new year's resolutions, many of us seek trips abroad to escape the cold weather, bad TV and the grim prospect of another year in that job you hate.

January is well and truly upon us whether we like it or not. If your diet is failing, your work inbox is flooded with urgent emails, your commute is stressful and a financial meltdown has hit you after overspending at Christmas; please read the few suggestions below which may help ease you in to the New Year.

  • Exercise. Maybe this one’s going in one ear out the other but if you can drag yourself off the couch and take your eyes away from that TV screen then you’ll feel much better.
  • Eat breakfast. Scientists say skipping breakfast leads to a dip in your blood sugar which can cause low moods. Eating regular breakfasts and making sure you eat balanced healthy meals in January makes you feel better and will help you shed unwanted Christmas weight. Extreme diets are mostly quick unsustainable fixes whereas fresh nutritious foods will have benefits to your health throughout 2019.
  • Try something new. If you weren’t a fitness fanatic in 2018, you won’t be a fitness fanatic in 2019. Why bother wasting time forcing yourself to go to the gym when you could try something you don’t already hate and may discover a hidden talent. It doesn’t have to be strenuous or even have to be a sport. (Suggestions: Tai Chi, Bungee Jumping, Join a Knitting circle, Ultimate Frisbee)
  • Change your body language; change your mood. Slouching, dragging your feet and wearing a grim expression on your face all day brings everyone down with you. If you mope around during January then your mood stays low, so why not act happier so that your mood will change to suit. A better attitude, a smile and good eye contact will result in more positive interactions with others in January- at home and in the workplace.
  • Book a holiday. Having a date penciled into the calendar and something to look forward to makes the hard work in the coming weeks worthwhile. No one wants to feel like they’re working for the sake of working it's good to have a reward at the end so grant yourself that well-deserved breaks.
