Guide to Trick or Treating

If you're a child

Dos

  • Say thank you even if you don't like the treat.
  • Pretend to be frighted if one of your neighbours try to scare you.
  • Knock at doors where houses are lit with a pumpkin outside.

Don'ts

  • Take more than one of anything, as you will look greedy and stop other kids from getting their treat.
  • Knock at any door that you don't know or is in complete darkness as these people may not wish to be disturbed.
  • Don't travel in groups of more than 4 as it creates a bottleneck.

If you're an adult

Dos

  • Pretend to be scared by the visitors.
  • If you know who the child under the costume don't say their name, unless they tell you, otherwise they will know they have been recognisable and are not Frankenstein or the Wicked Witch of the West.

Don'ts

  • Hold a bowl saying "Just take one". Impolite children will take more than one anyway and you will just look tight.
  • Leave your pumpkin lit if you have run out of sweets as kids will keep calling and be disappointed.
  • Do anything that is too frightening - a little scare is fine but if a child is crying by the time they leave you have gone too far.
  • If you are taking your kids trick or treating and you knock on your friends house, don't go inside to have a drink - you're there to take your kids around, and it's unlikely that your friend was planning for you to call for a couple of glasses of wine.

Finally the most important rule is to be all done by 8.30pm any later is too late.
